St. John of
Capistrano (1386 – 1456)
St. John of
Capistrano was a Franciscan priest from Italy. He was once a lawyer. St. John
was a fervent preacher who spoke to tens of thousands of people in market
squares, telling them to return to Jesus. When invaders threatened to attack
Europe, he led an army to stop them in Hungary. This is why he is known as the
‘Soldier Saint’. St. John is the patron saint of military chaplains (priests
and ministers who serve soldiers). His feast day is on 23 October.
