St. Lawrence (225 – 258) was a Deacon of the Church during the times when the Roman Emperor hated the Christians. Lawrence was given charge over the treasures of one church in Rome. When the Emperor demanded these treasures, Lawrence sold them away and gave the money to the poor, sick and suffering. He then told the Emperor that these people were the treasures of the church. The enraged Emperor decided to burn Lawrence alive but he did not feel any pain. In fact, he joked to the torturers, ‘Turn me over. I am done on one side!’ His feast day is on 10 August.
