The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

‘After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.” He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.  And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.’ - Luke 2:46-51

The Holy Innocents

The Holy Innocents
When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
- Matthew 2:16-18

St. John the Apostle

St. John is known as the ‘beloved disciple’ of Jesus and the author of the Gospel of St. John and the Book of Revelation. He was a young fisherman when he followed Jesus. He was the only apostle who stayed with Jesus during the Crucifixion. He was also the only apostle who lived till old age. In one legend, St. John blessed a cup of poisoned drink and it was then safe to consume. This is why he is often depicted holding a cup with demons coming out. St. John's feast day is on 27 December.

St. Stephen

St. Stephen the First Martyr (c. 34AD) was one of the first Deacons of the Church. A Deacon is specially appointed to serve the Church. St. Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit and worked miracles and signs among the people. Some Jewish leaders who were against Christians tried to debate with him but he was much wiser than them. St. Stephen said, ‘I can see heaven thrown open and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.’ They were mad at him and killed him by throwing stones at him. Before he died, St. Stephen said, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ His feast day is on 26 December.

The Immaculate Conception

All of us are born with sin in us because of the original sin of Adam and Eve. This original sin is removed when we are baptized. According to Sacred Tradition, the only created human conceived without original sin is Mother Mary. She was given this grace because she was being prepared to become the Mother of Jesus. So Angel Gabriel announced to Mary: 'Hail, Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you!'. She was sinless from the moment she was conceived. This is known as the Immaculate Conception. This great feast is celebrated on 8 December.
