St. Angela Merici (1474 – 1540) was an Italian woman who set up a school in her house to teach children about Jesus. Later, she saw a vision of maidens going up and down a ladder accompanied by angels. This led her to found the Company of St. Ursula, an order of women living in the world but dedicated to educating girls and caring for the poor. St. Angela had great faith. Once, she lost her sight while travelling to the Holy Land. She continued to make the trip and her sight was restored where she lost it! The Ursulines have schools and institutions all over the world today. St. Angela's feast day is on 27 January.
