St. Joseph Vaz (1651 – 1711) was an Oratorian Priest from India who went to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) as a missionary. Priests were banned over there and St. Joseph had to secretly visit Catholics. Disguised as a laborer, he walked barefoot through the region and helped rebuild the Church. The people called him ‘Sammana Swami’ or Angelic Father. He is known as the Apostle of Ceylon. His feast day is on 16 January.
