St. Raymond of Peñafort
St. Raymond of Peñafort (1175 – 1275) was a Dominican lawyer from Spain who specialized in canon law (or church law). A brilliant and capable man, he was Pope Gregory IX’s confessor. St. Raymond organized the scattered canon laws of the Church into a proper compilation. He also wrote a useful book about confession. He worked hard to free slaves from captivity as well. St. Raymond is the patron saint of lawyers. His feast day is on 7 January.
