St. John of God (1496 – 1550) was a soldier from Portugal who repented his sinful life at 40 and decided to serve God. He went to Africa but later returned to Spain where he helped out in a religious goods store. He was inspired by a sermon by St. John of Avila who also advised him to help the sick and needy. St. John of God went on to set up a house to attend to the poor. Many people started following him and he soon founded the Brothers Hospitallers who care for the sick in many hospitals today. St. John of God is the patron saint of hospitals and booksellers. His feast day is on 8 March.
