St. Monica, the Saint of Perseverance

 Happy Feast Day, St. Monica!

St. Monica (331 - 387) is the mother of St. Augustine, the famous bishop of Hippo. She had a very difficult life as a wife, mother and daughter-in-law in North Africa. Her husband did not share her faith and was hot-tempered. Her mother-in-law treated her badly and Augustine was wayward. However, through her examples, prayers and fasting, all of them eventually believed in Jesus. She prayed for St. Augustine for 17 years before he converted! Her feast day is on August 27.

The Humor of St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence (225 – 258) was a Deacon of the Church during the times when the Roman Emperor hated the Christians. Lawrence was given charge over the treasures of one church in Rome. When the Emperor demanded these treasures, Lawrence sold them away and gave the money to the poor, sick and suffering.  He then told the Emperor that these people were the treasures of the church. The enraged Emperor decided to burn Lawrence alive but he did not feel any pain. In fact, he joked to the torturers, ‘Turn me over. I am done on one side!’ His feast day is on August 10.
